Guess Who’s Back?

It’s been just over a year since I last posted on this site. I’ve still been busy, though…just not as much here.

I want that to change.

So my 2018 resolution (even though it’s the middle of February) is to re-launch this blog. There won’t be any real template to follow, though…I’ll still covering wrestling and hot chicks, but I’ll also continue to talk about Star Wars, SWGoH, movies, television, music, and other sports.

Additionally, I’ll be showcasing some of the older “ZAH Thoughts” posts that have already appeared on Canadian Bulldog’s World.

So for the two of you who still read this…thanks. What’s up?

Who Will, Who Won’t, & Who Might Win The 2017 Royal Rumble

royal-rumbleFor years now, the Royal Rumble has been one of my favourite events of the wrestling calendar. There’s just something about the format that keeps me on the edge of my seat. Whether it’s the surprise debuts, the surprise returns, the great performances for either lasting the longest or eliminating the most, or simply the idea of not knowing who will be going to WrestleMania to “main event” a WWE championship match…it’s almost always exciting and unpredictable.

reigns-wins-rumbleOf course, it’s not ALWAYS unpredictable. When Roman Reigns won two years ago, it was absolutely predicted and people shit all over it. But for the most part, you never really know for sure what’s going to happen at the Rumble and/or who is going to win.

That has never been more apparent that the 2017 Royal Rumble.

While there are currently a couple of front-runners, there is a legitimate possibility that up to SIX different individuals could realistically win the Rumble this year. I think it’s only fair to review those options here (and, really, it’s the point of this whole post):

Braun Strowmanbraun-strowman

braun-strowman-3It pains me to say this, but Strowman is the odds-on favourite at this point to win it all. After initially coming to RAW, Vince’s new favourite performer was initially given a gimmick of “unstoppable monster defeating local jobbers” on a weekly basis (helping to give James Ellsworth a job on Smackdown Live, actually). But then, all of a sudden, he “graduated” to main event player in Survivor Series and has been dabbling with the likes of Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns on a weekly basis. They are obviously getting him ready for a main-event run, so having him win the Royal Rumble makes sense.

The (very tentative) plan would to have Strowman win the Rumble, Roman Reigns beat Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal championship at the Rumble, and then for the two of them to meet in a “main event championship match” at WrestleMania. But here’s the rub…

braun-strowman-2They would NEVER be allowed to go on last. In fact, with potential match-ups of Cena vs. Taker, Goldberg vs Lesnar, and Triple H vs Rollins…the “main event championship match” could be placed anywhere else on the card without any pressure. This is a PERFECT opportunity for Vince & Company to see what Strowman can do on the biggest show of the year against his “top guy”. If Strowman sucks ass, then khali-vs-undertakerhe’ll be relegated to Great Khali territory by the end of the year (remember Khali being World champion and even pinning Undertaker at one point??). If Strowman performs at or above expectations, then you can count on seeing a LOT more of the guy over the summer months. It’s really a win-win situation for WWE because even if the match sucks ass (which it will), nobody will remember it when Mania is over.

braun-strowman-4Of course, this all might be incredibly insane to believe if the next opponent lined-up for Strowman is Big Show, who made it a point to say he was gunning for Strowman at the Rumble on this week’s RAW. In fact, Strowman wasn’t even included in the main event portion of the show, as WWE insinuated that Undertaker, Goldberg, and Brock Lesnar were the three biggest stars with potential to win it all.

The Undertakerundertaker-1

taker-vs-shane-mcmahonThe original plan (and has been for awhile now) was to have Undertaker face off against John Cena in a big-name, marquee match-up (assuming Cena wins the WWE World Heavyweight championship from AJ Styles). Last year’s injury to Cena meant that Taker had to face Shane McMahon in a major gimmick match in order to give him something to do. Having him wrestle his last WrestleMania match against “The Face That Runs The Place” would make sense, helping to set-up Cena as truly one of the best in WWE history.

taker-1Lately, though, the suggestion is that the Taker/Cena match is (again) off the table…perhaps saving it for when Taker really wants to retire. At this point, though, it looks like he’s prepared to do the part-time wrestling thing (similar to Brock Lesnar’s schedule, but a bit heavier) and after appearing on both Smackdown Live and RAW recently, the number of possible opponents for Taker to take on is quite large. He doesn’t need to win the Rumble to have a different, marquee match-up at Mania…but him winning a championship opportunity would certainly be an intriguing choice.

Chris Jerichochris-jericho-2

chris-jericho-1Let’s assume that Kevin Owens sneaks past Roman Reigns on Sunday. This means that Jericho would have a championship opportunity at WrestleMania against his “best friend”. And much to the chagrin of Owens, this is something Jericho has mentioned in promos lately as being a distinct possibility. The storyline of “Jeri-KO” has gone on a lot longer than most anticipated, which means that their WrestleMania match could mean that much more if Jericho were to go after Owens’ title.

jeri-ko-1On the other hand, Jericho just won the United States championship from Roman Reigns on RAW. This allows Reigns the “freedom” to win the WWE Universal championship from Kevin Owens at the Rumble and for Jericho to be the one defending his title against (former) BFF at Mania.

Jericho has won everything there is to win in WWE…except the Royal Rumble match itself. Will this be his year?

Bill Goldberggoldberg-2

goldberg-1I never thought I would have even suggested that Bill Goldberg had the potential to win the Royal Rumble until his post-Brock Lesnar-victory speech on RAW, where he suggested that Stephanie McMahon had asked him if he still had one more title run in him. And you can’t watch Goldberg on television and think the guy isn’t “over” anymore. The chants of “GOOOOLD-BERRRG!!” are loud and constant. Hell, even Paul Heyman is getting those chants goldberg-3without Lesnar by his side. This says that Goldberg is still uber-popular and with his quick victory over Lesnar, a win at the Rumble (which doesn’t take a ton of stamina to perform in as compared to a normal match) would cement him as a legitimate championship contender for the WWE Universal championship at WrestleMania.

And as much as it sounds crazy to write down, there is very much a possibility of Goldberg taking on either Roman Reigns or Kevin Owens for the title at Mania, as both possibilities have been teased on recent editions of RAW.

Samoa Joesamoa-joe-3

samoa-joe-1Honestly, I wouldn’t have even thought this was possible until realizing that the betting odds on the Rumble, as of this writing, have Samoa Joe listed at just 6-1 odds. Why in the world would they have him that high considering the fact that he hasn’t even debuted on the main roster yet??

joe-vs-stylesWWE reportedly has BIG plans for the Samoan Submission Machine, which includes a marquee matchup at WrestleMania. There are rumblings that the WWE wants to match Wrestle Kingdom 11’s stellar “six-star match” between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada. One match that has the potential to reach the same type of rating is one that has been done before to five-star results: Samoa Joe vs AJ Styles.

samoa-joe-2So if WWE is as big on Joe as the rumours have it, then having him be a surprise debut at the Royal Rumble and then going on to win the whole thing would certainly be an incredible way to make a massively large statement. It sounds insane when you write it down, but when you think about it (and assuming the rumors on backstage thoughts on him are true), this is extremely feasible.

Finn BálorFinn Balor

No, Finn Bálor’s shoulder isn’t quite ready for a comeback yet. It’s better, for sure, but he’ll be defying the odds in a Cena-esque way by making it back to WrestleMania, much less the Royal Rumble. So realistically speaking, Balor probably won’t even show up in the Rumble match.

Finn Balor 3But here’s the thing: you don’t need to do much to participate in a battle royal. There’s not usually a ton of bumps or injuries that take place inside of the ring (the injuries happen once you’re thrown over the top rope). So I suppose if you put it into that type of perspective, it’s entirely possible that Bálor (currently sitting at 5-1 odds) could make his surprise return as a late-Rumble entrant.

If he does, the first-ever WWE Universal champion has as good a chance as anybody at winning the whole thing…especially if the “WWE machine” wants to get behind “The Demon” one more time and try to push him to the moon again.

There are a few dark-horses to win it all, too…

  • sami-zaynSami Zayn – Yes, there’s been talk of backstage heat and yes, he’s been getting his ass handed to him as of late, but Zayn is the perennial underdog favourite of the fans for a reason. I honestly don’t see this happening, but if he were to win then he’d probably lose his shot at Mania to Braun Strowman who would then face Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal championship. See? There are multiple ways to get to the finish line here…all while still putting over one of their most popular superstars in the process.
  • dolph-zigglerDolph Ziggler – After his recent heel turn, it’s still unlikely that Ziggler will be put into a position to actually win the Rumble, but if AJ Styles somehow gets past John Cena and retains the WWE World Heavyweight championship, then we could be in for a hella-great match between the two of them on the “Grandest Stage of Them All”. Of course, with Jerry Lawler doing commentary for the Rumble, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Lawler somehow costs Ziggler by eliminating him (or at the very least, causing a distraction that leads to his elimination). I’m hoping that’s not the case, but this is WWE we’re talking about here.
  • randy-ortonRandy Orton – I’m not exactly sure how “Orton in the main event title picture” goes with his current storyline as a member of the Wyatt Family, but his current odds are at 3-1 (just behind Goldberg!), so I suppose it’s a distinct possibility. Somebody may have to explain his odds to me, though…I just don’t understand the rationale of him winning given his past few months of storyline progression.
  • rusevRusev – I’m admittedly a huge mark for “The Bulgarian Brute” and, quite frankly, he’s not been pushed in the best spot since dropping the United States championship to Roman Reigns awhile back. But Rusev continues to turn chicken shit into chicken salad…even out-promo-ing Shawn Michaels on a recent RAW live in-ring segment. Vince & Company are still very high on Rusev’s future, as the package deal of he and Lana are great both in the ring and outside of the ring. It’s highly unlikely that he’ll win, but there’s still a chance given how Triple H says the winner will surprise most fans.

Finally, in terms of those who could still potentially win the Royal Rumble but probably WON’T…

  • NO.gifBrock Lesnar – I don’t see the benefit of Lesnar being in a championship match at Mania when there are other stars who can carry the show. What’s scary is that outside of Goldberg, there is actually serious talk of putting Lesnar in the ring with Braun Strowman as a way to really test him out.
  • no-4The Miz – No, Miz had his shot at being the face of the company and it worked for a bit before he was pushed back down the card. Now he’s seemingly poised to eventually beat Chris Jericho’s record of being a nine-time Intercontinental champion. It doesn’t make sense to suddenly thrust him into the main title picture, even if his gimmick with wife Maryse is making him a super-hot heel on Smackdown Live right now.
  • NO.gifBaron Corbin – I know the guy won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal in his main roster debut at WrestleMania last year, but I just don’t see “the machine” getting behind Corbin on Smackdown Live. At least not yet, anyway. Corbin still has a ways to go before being considered a legitimate threat at any major title, so I can’t see him being put into that type of position with a Rumble victory at this point in his career.
  • Kenny Omega – It’s highly doubtful that Omega is even going to make a surprise debut at the Royal Rumble, much less win the damn thing.

All told, the 2017 Royal Rumble looks to be an incredibly entertaining event. There are so many surprises that could take place and, really, the end result is still completely up in the air. Because of that, I’m absolutely STOKED to watch it.

But what about you? What are your thoughts on this year’s Royal Rumble? Do you think there’s a heavy favourite to win?

10 Star Wars Anthology Movies We REALLY Need

anthologySince the announcement of the Star Wars: Han Solo movie (to be released in 2018), you’ve probably seen some of these lists online and thought, “Really? Do we NEED a movie spinoff on that character from Star Wars: Rogue One who died in the end?”

Well, I think I’ve come up with a list of movies that should be made as part of the Star Wars Anthology and they’re not just because a character deserves a backstory.

Boba Fett

(and/or a bounty hunter movie)boba-fett

boba-fett-vs-sarlaccThis is absolutely at the top of my Most Wanted List. Everybody knows what happened to his father, Jango, and how he ended up on his own. What they don’t know is everything that happened between that moment and the moment Boba Fett shows up in The Empire Strikes Back as a bounty hunter assigned to track down the Millennium Falcon. It’s been confirmed as canon that Boba Fett ended up surviving the Sarlacc Pit that he unceremoniously fell into in Return of the Jedi. So imagine the incredible movie storytelling this could be as the majority of the film is Boba’s flashbacks to his origins…bossk-2how he tried to kill Mace Windu alongside fellow bounty hunters Bossk and Aurra Sing before realizing that he had gone too far; how he formed a team of bounty hunters who went on a number of missions together; how he came into the employ of Jabba the Hutt; and even how he came into possession of his iconic Slave 1 ship…all the while flashing back to the present where he is trying to escape the Sarlacc knowing that Jabba’s floating palace has been destroyed just above him in a fiery explosion. This incredible story could bring back dengar-3Samuel L Jackson (who fans still love in his role as Master Windu), Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and even a CGI version of Count Dooku! Not only that, it could also simultaneously bring back notable characters only briefly seen before like Bossk, Dengar, Plo Koon, and Aurra Sing while simultaneously introducing Star Wars characters that have never really been seen in live action form: cad-bane-4Jedi hunter Cad Bane, Sith apprentice-turned-bounty hunter Asajj Ventress, and Jedi fan-favourite and Ahsoka Tano! There is so much official Star Wars Expanded Universe storyline already available to dive into that the end of the movie could see Fett emerge from the Sarlacc (dead from the explosion) and set-up sequel opportunities. If THIS doesn’t scream out awesome, I really don’t know what does!

Lando Calrissian

This all really depends on how Donald Glover does in his portrayal of Han Solo’s smuggler BFF in the upcoming Star Wars Anthology movie spin-off. If he comes across as awesome as Billy Dee Williams portrayed him in the original trilogy, then I see at least one movie with Lando’s name across the marquee. Listen, there are already a ton of “Lando Calrissian Adventures” floating out there so why wouldn’t we want to lando-calrissian-1know what happened between the time Solo won the Millenium Falcon from Calrissian and when he sold out his “best friend” to the empire. I mean, just how did he come into running Cloud City on Bespin? How many ladies has Calrissian given Colt .45 to? The possibilities are endless!

Young(er) Obi-Wan Kenobi

(post-Order 66)obi-wan-kenobi-3

obi-wan-kenobi-2Here’s the thing…we don’t need to know what happened to Obi-Wan Kenobi prior to him becoming a padowan for Qui-Jon Ginn. What we really need to know is what kind of adventures did Kenobi get involved with from the time he went into hiding and took Luke to Tattooine as a baby to the time he saved Luke from the Sandpeople? We’re looking at a near 20-year span of time where he called himself “Ben Kenobi” that includes stopping Jabba the Hutt’s men from “collecting their water tax” during the Great Drought, how obi-wan-kenobi-1he watched Luke grow up (from a distance) and become a pretty great pilot on Tattooine, how he battled Tusken Raiders, how he came into conflict with Owen Lars about how Luke was being raised, and even encountering a very NOT dead Darth Maul on more than one occasion (though that may have happened prior to Order 66…it all gets confusing after awhile). With Ewan McGregor very much interested in continuing the Kenobi story, this movie is very much a possibility that could easily tie-in the prequels to A New Hope with an entirely separate and unique story.

Darth Maul

darth-maul-1Honestly, try telling me that you don’t want to know Darth Maul’s backstory. Not only his backstory of being “given” to Darth Sidious as an infant by his mother, but how he was trained to become a Sith apprentice (including some of the missions he was sent on during his training and how he was more of a Sith assassin than an actual apprentice).  And it’s Star Wars canon that Maul didn’t die after being cut in half, either. Thanks to The Clone Wars animated series, Maul came back (with a new lower half and some grown antlers on his head) to reunite with his brother Savage Opress, battle Nightsister Asajj Ventress, attempt to kill Obi-Wan Kenobi, help conquer Mandalore before being imprisoned, and then escaping to kill his captors all before seeing Darth Sidious kill his brother and kidnap Maul for his own evil purposes. Of course, the unofficial “Legends” stories tell of how he escaped and darth-maul-2continued to track down Kenobi so he could finally destroy him…resulting in a final battle on Tattooine where Kenobi and Owen Lars (!!) teamed to finally kill Maul, the aftermath of which was Lars telling Kenobi to stay far away from a very young Luke Skywalker so to keep him safe. So yes, Maul was the reason “Ol’ Ben” never was around Luke growing up. Now tell me you wouldn’t want to see this flick?!?!?!

Star Wars: Rebels

(live action)star-wars-rebels-3

star-wars-rebels-1There have already been a lot of stories told in the new animated Rebels series that could be translated to the big screen. That probably wouldn’t happen, though, as Disney wouldn’t want to duplicate continuity when they could expand upon it. I mean, the characters were heavily hinted at in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and they even showed cameos of the small robot and their ship, The Ghost. Maybe there are a number of adventures that could take place after Rogue kanan-jarrus-hera-syndullaOne has concluded. Or maybe we could be treated to a live-action prequel to the animated series based on “A New Dawn”, where Kanan Jarrus is wandering the galaxy alone after Order 66 killed off all of the Jedi and tells the story of how he eventually met-up with and teamed with Hera Syndulla. I mean, if you’re going to tease the animated characters in the live-action movies, then why not go all-out?

Knights of the Old Republic

darth-malak-darth-revan-1The “Mandalorian Wars” part of this storyline JUST became canon over the weekend!! That’s truly exciting because it means the rest of the KotOR storyline might also be confirmed as canon sooner rather than later. And honestly, the whole idea of lightsaber battles between the Jedi Order (including the fantastic backstory of the Prodigal Knight, Revan) going up against a Sith armada led by Darth Malak and a Sith-built assassin droid hk-47-1named HK-47 (who is used as a Jedi hunter) is extremely appealing, not to mention that the backstory of the Galactic Republic has only been hinted at in the movies at this point. There is just so much more that can be told and many of the video games thus far have proved that great storylines can be generated that can easily tie-in to the current Star Wars Expanded Universe.

The Death Watchthe-death-watch-2

the-death-watch-3Some of the favourite characters from the Star Wars Expanded Universe are Boba Fett (from the original trilogy), his father Jango Fett (from the prequels), and Sabine Wren (from Star Wars: Rebels). What they all have in common is that they are Mandalorians. The Mandalorians were a warrior race (known for the-death-watch-1being bounty hunters and mercenaries) who had renounced their barbaric past to adopt pacifist ideals. Around the time of the Clone Wars, a splinter group called The Death Watch opposed this pacifist government and unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow them, eventually becoming part of Darth Maul’s Shadow Collective, who successfully took over the planet Mandalore during the war alongside his brother, Savage Opress. This whole storyline also includes appearances by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Count Dooku. It would be a great way to tie-in the much reviled prequels with something new and cool, while at the same time including something awesome about both trilogies and the new SWEU.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

galen-marek-3I realize that this one is a long shot, especially given how the title character from the video game/novel/comic (Starkiller) was turned into the name of the First Order’s massive weaponized planet in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Still…this storyline is just too awesome to simply leave alone. Once Vader and Emperor Palpatine (aka Darth Sidious) have risen to power and have defeated the Jedi Order, the-force-unleashed-2there are still pockets of resistance and missing Jedi throughout the galaxy that Vader is dispatched to resolve himself (aka the Great Jedi Purge). He comes across a small child (the son of a Jedi he kills) and finds immeasurable power and potential within him. Though it goes against Sith creed, Vader abducts the boy and trains him to be his own apprentice, as Vader believes he can eventually help him destroy the Emperor. Galen Marek (aka Starkiller) then travels the galaxy doing Vader’s “dirty work” in places like Kashyyyk and Raxus Prime. He eventuallygalen-marek-1 befriends a Jedi, falls in love with his beautiful Imperial pilot, and turns his double-agent duties into a full-on rebellion. I would LOVE to see Marek pull down an Imperial Star Destroyer with the Force, so for that reason alone I’d love to see this story brought to life.

yoda-2Can I be honest here? As much as CGI has grown over time, I just don’t know if I could watch a 2-hour movie focusing on a CGI character. While I can only imagine the incredible tales that could be told with a lifetime of almost 900 years of Jedi adventures. The story is that Yoda became a Jedi Master at age 100, thus going on to train and tutor generations of Jedi over the next 800 years. With a number of almost 20,000 Jedi trained, there are probably more than enough stories to be told to fill up an entirely new trilogy, if need be. But that’s the thing…is there a real need here? Yoda’s awesome, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t know if I really think we need an Anthology movie about him. asajj-ventress-1But if we DID go that route, there are already stories out there about his time spent with the Wookies on Kashyyyk (he was apparently called “Defender of the Home Tree” because of the times he went to battle for them), how he trained Count Dooku (among many others), how he battled against assassins like Asajj Ventress and Barriss Offee, and even incorporate other stories of ancient Jedi like K’ungfu and Chuang (as Yoda was told stories of these great Jedi of the past)…so I suppose it wouldn’t have to be a 100% Yoda movie. I guess the more I think about it, the cooler it sounds.

Just About Anything Else

expanded-universe-2general-grievous-3C’mon…there has GOT to be a hundred little “side stories” that tie-in to the original trilogy (or even the prequels) that primarily involve new characters and storylines. There could be tales from The Jedi Council that involve appearances by Mace Windu and Yoda, but star lesser-known (but recognizable) Jedi such as Plo Koon, Luminara Unduli, or Kit Fisto. expanded-universe-3There could be tales of characters we only got little tastes of in the movies like General Grievous (seriously…such a cool character but what WAS the guy??) or have only been able to enjoy in cartoon form like Ahsoka Tano.

And I think that’s the great thing about all this: the possibilities are endless.

ahsoka-tano-2Sure, some may think that somebody like Ahsoka Tano couldn’t carry a movie on her own…but that’s what people said when Iron Man first came out. That’s also what people said about the completely unknown cast of characters who made up Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

If you have a great storyline, a great cast of characters, great performances, and a director who truly has a passion for how Star Wars is to be shown to the world…then there really is no limit to the stories you can tell from this incredible universe.

And I, for one, cannot wait to see where things go from here.

Hottest 50 Wrestling Babes of 2016 – # 1 – LANA!!!

lana-27Honestly…can you imagine anyone else in the industry being #1? “The Ravishing Russian” is, quite frankly, the very example of what female perfection should be: she’s drop-dead gorgeous, she’s personable, she’s athletic and tough, and is a university graduate. Lana is not only perfect within the confines of the WWE, but is also very entertaining from an acting standpoint with featured roles in Total Divas, both Pitch Perfect movies, and WWE’s Interrogation alongside Edge. She loves the camera, loves to wear bikinis, and it married to one of the most “beastly nerds” you can imagine with “The Bulgarian Brute” Rusev. Top to bottom, she is the best of the best from 2016…without question.lana-17

Hottest 50 Wrestling Babes of 2016 – #2 – Maryse Mizanin

maryse-18It’s insane to believe that this gorgeous woman is married to (who is seemingly) a massive dick, but they’ve been married for almost three years now and show no signs of slowing down any time soon. And here’s the thing…Maryse Mizanin is now 33 and has been modeling for over a decade. She’s just as absolutely gorgeous now as she was a decade ago, and that’s no small feat. At the end of the day, this former Playboy model, 2-time WWE Divas champion, and Los Angeles realtor is simply one of the most beautiful women in the entire world…period. We are lucky to have her back in WWE on a weekly basis.maryse-7

Hottest 50 Wrestling Babes of 2016 – #3 – Maria Kanellis-Bennett

maria-kanellis-bennettmaria-kanellis-6While currently known as “The First Lady of Professional Wrestling“, I’ll always know Maria Kanellis-Bennett as “the one that got away”. Of course, I’ve never met her before and never EVER stood a chance of having her to begin with…but that doesn’t stop me from day-dreaming, does it? This former WWE diva and Playboy centerfold is still one of the hottest women on the entire planet. The fact that she’s athletic AND smart only makes her that much hotter. She plans to retire in 2017, so enjoy her beauty while you can.maria-kanellis-2

Hottest 50 Wrestling Babes of 2016 – #4 – Velvet Sky

velvet-sky-14velvet-sky-18I hesitated to even put Velvet Sky on this list because it appeared as though Sky retired from the ring in 2016. But here’s the thing…I fully believe that if WWE asked Sky to join-up with Bubba Ray Dudley (or Bully Ray) for a singles run in the company, she’d re-join the squared circle in a heartbeat. Until then, I’ll just continue to hope and pray that Sky is still an active performer and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Let’s face it…this combination of strength, beauty, and nerdiness makes her a wrestling fan’s dream come true!velvet-sky-21
